Cleanup those Desktop Icons

Windows 95 and above.
"Here's how I do it:

  1. Navigate to C:\ drive and create a new folder called "Desktop Icons."
  2. Cut & Paste all Desktop icons (except "My Computer," "Recycle Bin" and "Network Neighborhood") from the Desktop to the newly created folder.
  3. Right-click the toolbar at the bottom of your Windows screen and select "Toolbars" from the pop-up menu, then select "New toolbar."
  4. Navigate to your newly created folder (i.e., "Desktop Icons") and select it.
  5. A new toolbar will be added to your existing toolbar. This toolbar can be dragged to the either the left or right side (or the top) of your Desktop, assuming you have no other toolbars in those locations.
  6. You should now have a toolbar containing all of the icons that previously cluttered up your Desktop. Click "Properties" on said toolbar and check "Auto- hide" to clean up your Desktop even more.
  7. For other icons that cannot be moved from the Desktop, the excellent Xteq program can hide some of them (though I recommend keeping "My Computer" and "Network Neighborhood" on the Desktop)."

Outlook Express Deleted Items

Did you know that all those emails you thought you had deleted are still sitting on your computer just waiting for someone to take a look at them? What's more they could be taking up many megs of disk space.

To find them run a search on Deleted Items.dbx . Once you have located it - delete it. Outlook Express will make another fresh file when it reopens.

You can do the same with Outbox.dbx if you are so inclined.
