Defrag - Speed It Up (Win98) Dec 29, 2001

If your Windows "defrag" is slow as molasses then this article will probably help you.

I came across this suggestion a couple months ago at the Nonags software forum ; which I check out every day. Several people tried it and all of them reported significant increases in defragging. No one reported any problems .

Apparently Windows ME Defrag is a much improved and faster version which works with all versions of Windows 9x. Most people at the forum I referred to above saw significant reductions in time taken to defrag.

Stats for the Windows Me version of defrag.exe are:

Created: June 08, 2000 5:00:00 PM Version: 4.90.3000 Size: 213,296 bytes

You can download WINME DEFRAG right into your Windows directory. But first make sure you rename your current version of DEFRAG.EXE to DEFRAG.OLD, then rename WinMe_DEFRAG.EXE to DEFRAG.EXE and you're done.

One of the main reasons Defrag can take so long to complete its job is due to programs running in the background. I use ENDITALL End It All by Neil J Rubenking to make darn sure every thing is shut down before trying to Defrag.

Another work around is to create a "run once" defrag option from your own Windows98 setup CD:

To get your hard drive Super Defragged (No programs or TSR's running in the background), go to the Tools\Mtsutildirectory on your Windows 98 CD and right-click on Defrag.inf, select Install.

Then, when you reboot, Defrag will run before anything else loads.

And finally you can use another excellent little freeware program called POWER DEFRAG by E-Technik (click on the downloads section of their webpage).
