A Tour of the Best Web Sites Feb.24, 2001 This article lists a few of what I consider to be the best of their 'kind' websites on the net today. I have been visiting most of these sites on a daily basis for years and still enjoy them. These links are some of the 1000's contained on the first site I ever created. WITT'S END - USEFUL LINKS The list is in no particular order, so let's begin our tour. LANGA LIST Here' a site worth visiting every week or alternatively, subscribe to Fred's newsletter, its well worth the read if you are interested in fixes for Windows, avoiding problems on the net and general computer advise. WINMAG -THE WINDOWS AUTHORITY Here's another stop I make every couple days to keep abreast of developments in the computer world. Lots of tips, hot fixes and reviews for your edification. SUPER SITE FOR WINDOWS Keep abreast of Whistler development as you will probably be switching to it during the coming year. WIN 98 CENTRAL Win98 Central's provides its readers with the best and most informative Windows information. Includes a special section on WinMe. Lots of Tips and Tweaks for Windows. ACTIVE NETWORKS Another great source of news about WIndows . Includes downloads, articles, news, drivers, tips, tweaks and more. PROTONIC .COM Tried of waiting hours and forking over $ every time you phone your computer manufacturer/supplier because of a problem. Give these guys a try first. PURE PERFORMANCE COM Love tuning and tweaking your PC. Give this very well organized/user friendly site a try. THE DLL ARCHIVE Only the greatest source of dll's on the net. Free of course. DIGITAL BLASPHEMY This is Ryan Bliss's free gallery. If you want to check out the best 3 D digital art on the net - then this is the site for you. Just select from one of the galleries displaying on the right side of the page. PC PLUS ONLINE PC Plus Online features 3 new freebie software programs every week. Lot's of freebies archived. ALL THE WEB -ALL THE TIME Here's a very fast search engine that is gaining popularity. Close to 600 million URL's listed and easy to use. As a reward for actually reading this far down the list; here's a great little time saver tip when your browsing with I.E. If you have a mouse with roller in the middle, press "ctrl" and roll the mouse roller up or down and your browser's font will change almost instantly. BOB CERELL'S WINDOWS PAGE Bob's site has been around for years and years and he has put together a great collection of Into, Tips and Tricks for you system - then this a must visit site. WINDOWS 98 ANNOYANCES Want some help with Win98 customization? Having trouble getting some features of Win98 to work? Something bugging you about Win98? You'll probably find a solution here. There is also a seperate site for Win95. Site for WinMe Annoyances is apparently on the way INTERNET TRAFFIC REPORT Just what it says. TOM'S HARDWARE GUIDE Need a driver, want to get some independent advise on what hardware to buy, want to keep uptodate on the last hardware - this site is also worth a bookmark. CRACKS.AM! Once you have downloaded the crack file use Winzip to open it and then notepad to read the info file. SCI FI THEMES & SCREENS- WITTS END If you are into SciFi - check out these freebie themes. You can also click on Trish's Theme Terrain for even more themes. NONAGS Just the very best freeware site on the net. CDR ONFO.COM CDRInfo.COM Main Page Got a CD burner; check out this site - it certainly deserves to be bookmarked. SHIELDS UP! Didn't believe me when I advised you to get Zone Alarm in an earlier article. Try the two tests on this site and you will be a believer in firewalls. AXCEL216's MAX SPEED Like Tweakin your system - this site will keep you busy for a day or two. BETA NEWS BetaNews - Inside Information, Unreleased Products Like to beta test software? Then here's the site for you. FILE FLASH Here's another neat site I check out several times a day for new or updated software. They webmaster used to work for Beta News but broke away a year or so ago and is doing a great job . SHELL EXTENSION CITY If you are interested in customizing Windows then this is a mustsite to visit. Extensive archive of alternative shells, shell enhancements, modifications and add-ons. Daily additions of new software, both shareware and freeware. SPEED GUIDE The site focuses on system performance, with areas including Broadband Internet connections, Windows, Overclocking, all targeted towards a technically aware audience. A large section of SpeedGuide.net is dedicated to Cable Modems and DSL technology, stressing on improving TCP/IP performance over high speed/latency networks. THE WINDOWS REGISTRY GUIDE The Windows Registry Guide, formerly Regedit.com, provides an extensive range registry tips, tricks & tweaks for optimizing, enhancing and securing the Windows operating system. TOMSTERDAM - INSIDE OUTLOOK EXPRESS Here's something you should bookmark under your troubleshooter bookmarks if you use Outlook Express. Lots of good stuff for O.E. 5.+ users. HOW TO MANUALLY UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL OUTLOOK EXPRESS 5 Here's some information from Microsoft on how to Manually Uninstall and Reinstall Outlook Express 5 CABLENUT.COM Here's another speed tweaking site for Cable users. STROUD'S The CWSApps ListŪ is a one-stop download site for the latest and greatest software on the Internet. Comprehensive file listings, free software downloads, expert ratings, and extensive software reviews for the best Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT/2000, and Windows 3.x applications are just a few of the site's many features. Depending on the reaction to this article I am thinking about doing similiar "tours" for Digital Artists sites, Science Fiction sites, Fun Sites, Webpage Building Sites.
