InoculateIT - Great Freebie Virus Scan Software March 16, 2001 I ran McAfee Virus Scan on my computer up until about a month ago; when I decided to try something else rather than making another upgrade that was going to cost money yet again. In addition I had long stopped having the program run in the backgound as it slowed every thing down on my computer. What I needed was a program I could just fire up when ever I wanted to run a virus scan but did have the option of running in the background in the unlikely event I wanted to do that. A little research on some of my favorite freebie sites indicated InoculateIT is the favorite freebie virus package of many people who frequent those sites. So I have now dumped McAfee and am a fan of InoculateIT. The program is easy to update and issues free DAT files just as frequently as the shareware virus protection programs and takes no where near the amount of disk space or resouces that my previous program did. I have also noticed that it performs the actual virus scan faster than its freeware competitors. It has the standard log/alert system of most virus protection programs and allows you to review and keep track of what virus's have been found and cleaned/removed & etc. The program also allows you to schedule scans whenever you like; you can also choose to use the Auto Download feature (automatically downloads the most recent virus definition file). The program can provide Internet protection as well, with automatic monitoring of all downloaded files and e-mail attachments. InoculateIT can check the boot sector and memory during start-up and then run in the background and scan files as they are executed and/or written to and from disk. You can also specify which drives or even specific files or folders you want scanned (handy if you have a partition or drive you store your image and/or sound files on and don't want it scanned every time you run a scan). The program comes with a configuration wizard so you can pretty much set it up to do things your way. This is really an excellent program and well worth your consideration.
