Keyboard Commands - A Must Have list Jan 21, 2001
I keep this extensive list of keyboard commands in hard copy in a handy location as I know that from time to time I will need it. If you don't already have a similiar list for yourself then here it is:
Win Opens the Start menu.
Win + F1 Opens Help
Win + E Starts Explorer.
Win + F Finds files or folders.
Win + Ctrl + F Finds computer.
Win + M Minimizes all windows.
Win + Shift + M Restores minimized windows.
Win + R Displays run-dialog box.
Win + Tab Cycles through taskbar buttons.
Win + Break Open system properties.
Win + D Minimizes/Restores all windows.(works better than Win + M)
F1 Opens Help (Most of the time)
F2 Rename files/edit cells (in explorer begins renaming selected file, also in excel to edit selected cells etc...
F3 Find ( try it anywhere you want find something, text, file, or computer.
F4 Moves focus to the address bar. (if the toolbar is active in Windows Explorer).
F5 Refreshes the current window.
F6 Moves among panes in Windows Explorer.(same as Tab)
F7 Preforms different oddball functions in each version of windows(win98se,scrolls explorer).
F8 Preforms different oddball functions in each version of windows(win98se,scrolls explorer).
F9 Nothing
F10 Activates menu options (File, Edit,etc... bar across top of most Apps)almost same as Alt+Tab.
F11 Toggles Full Screen mode in Internet Explorer. and Explorer (same app)
F12 Nothing
CTRL+C Copy
CTRL+X Cut
CTRL+V Paste
CTRL+Z Undo
CTRL+B Bold
CTRL+U Underline
CTRL+I Italic
CTRL+ESC Open StartButton menu almost same as winkey.
CTRL+F4 Closes the current window with in an APP (3 documents open in word this would close the 1 your looking at).
CTRL+F6 or CTRL+TAB Switches between multiple windows in the same program.
CTRL+ESC,ESC Selects the Start button. Press TAB to select the taskbar, or press SHIFT+F10/Menu for a context menu.
SHIFT+DELETE Deletes an item immediately without placing it in the Recycle Bin.(It's really deleted be careful)
SHIFT+F10 or Menu Opens a context menu for the selected item. This is the same as right-clicking an object.
SHIFT Hold SHIFT (5-10 seconds) key while you insert a CD-ROM to bypass the auto-run feature.
SHIFT+BACKSPACE Switch to the parent folder in explorer and serves the Forward button in Internet Explorer.
SHIFT+TAB Move to the previous (tab-able)item in in current App/Window.
ALT+TAB: Switch to another open application.
ALT+- Displays System menu for current app. Almost same as below.
ALT+Space Displays System menu for current app. Almost same as above.
ALT+ Opens the corresponding menu item.
ALT+F4 Closes the current window.
ALT (then)Down arrow Opens a drop-down list box, which you move though with the arrow keys.
ALT+ENTER Open the property sheet for the selected object.
BACKSPACE Switch to the parent folder in explorer and serves the back button in Internet Explorer.
Menu key Displays a context menu for the selected item
TAB Move to the next (tab-able)item in in current App/Window.
SPACEBAR If the current highlighted item is a button, check box, etc... this selects/clicks the button.
ENTER Equivalent to clicking a menu item dbl.clicking the selected file/shortcut etc.. (the item with the blue high light).
ESC Equivalent to clicking the Cancel button.
Arrow Keys Used to move around though and even pickup and move apps.
Print Screen Copies everything Visible to the clipboard which can be pasted to an image in programs like Paint.
Windows Explorer Hotkeys
* Expands everything under the current selection.
+ Expands the current selection.
- Collapses the current selection.
RIGHT ARROW Expands the current selection if it is not expanded, otherwise goes to the first child.
LEFT ARROW Collapses the current selection if it is expanded,otherwise goes to the parent.
Legend
Win=Winkey Second and Sixth Keys from left on bottom row. (Only on 104/win95-type key boards)
Menu=MenuKey Seventh Key from left on bottom row. (Only on 104/win95-type key boards)
CTRL=Control First and last keys from left on bottom row.
ALT=Alternate Keys on both sides of the spacebar on bottom row.
App=Application, program etc…

page which is also very useful. This link will explain some of the hot keys of win9X. The title says for Windows 98 but they seem to work in windows ME and Windows 2000.
