Changing default "save as" folder in Windows November 08, 2001

Have you ever wanted to change the default folder that Microsoft uses whenever you click File | Save As? It's usually "My Documents" but I'm guessing that many of you would like to use something else. If so, read on but remember that this is an advanced maneuver and you should always back up your Registry first.

1. Open the Windows Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) from the Start | Run command.

2. Navigate to the keys listed below and look in the right-hand panel where you should see an entry labeled "Personal". Right-click on the word "Personal" and select "Modify" to enter the new full path of the folder you wish to become the default "Save As" folder.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\User Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\User Shell Folders
(If any key above does not contain the String Value "Personal", skip it and go on to the next one.
