Windows Desktop Schemes - Low Tech & Low Resource April 04, 2001

I love to customize the appearance of Windows; in fact that's what motivated me to start a web site 5 years ago and has since led to several sites; most of which have to do with customizing Windows in one way or another.

I have about 100 wallpapers that I cycle through at the rate of one every 6 hours. I tend to keep the same cursors, icons and sounds for years - but every couple months feel an urge to change the color scheme. Using a "theme" is not really the answer as I wouldn't use most of it's components.

I use a really "low tech" solution that I stumbled across during the early days of Win95; it's a set of appearance schemes that I access through the Display Properties Appearances tab. Just select one of the sixty or so schemes and you are off to the races. I have no idea where I found this file and I have searched high and low trying to find the original creator in hopes that they have produced other similar stuff - but to no avail.

You can download the file (it's called Schemes) at my Oldie But Goodies site, it's only about 15K in zip format and uses virtually no resources. This is a great collection of schemes that you can add to Win95/98 just by double clicking on the reg file included in the zip file. If you don't want to take up a lot of room storing themes on your computer and yet enjoy changing the look of your computer then this program is for you.

Using the Schemes

Right click on the Desk top. Click on Properties. Then click on the Appearance tab. Scroll through the list of new schemes and use the drop-down list to choose the one that you like the best. If you want to change any predefined scheme, use your items drop down list to select the item and make your changes remember to give your modified version a new name and save it.
