Wetsock - Grand Daddy of Tray Weather Programs
Jan 15, 2001

I happened to glance at my Tray area a few minutes ago and saw an icon with a cloud and the sun peeking out from behind it (the icon changes depending on weather forecasts for my area).
I first started using this program some 4 years ago. Programs have come and gone in my Tray area but this one has stayed - in fact, I'm so used to this program's changing icon in my Tray area that I take it for granted. Seems like a good candiate for review.
The name of the program is Wetsock and the author is Argun Tekant of Locutus Codeware; the program sells for $12 US. Wetsock has undergone several version changes since I first bought it - it just keeps getting better.
You can configure Wetsock to dial into your Service Provider on a periodic basic; connect to a weather service whenever you dial into the net to check for e-mail or otherwise access the net (it will also hang-up by itself). If you have a permanent connection (DSL/Cable) it can be configured to automatically update weather data whenever you want.
When you first install the program you select one or more cities (there are 100's listed) from around the world for which you want to track weather conditions. Once you have selected the cities you want tracked you indicate how often you want the weather information updated and Wetsock will retrieve the current and extended forecasts.
Wetsock has special icons for weather warnings (snow, tornadoes, flash flooding, etc.) and a short .WAV file can be set to play when these warnings are received. From that point on place your cursor over the icon and it will tell you the present sky condition and temperature.
Left click the icon and a screen pops up with more current information. You can click on the "forecast" button and get the latest official weather forecast for cities you have selected. You can print the forecast out, too, or copy it to the clipboard.
This program is designed to operate in the background and use only minimal resources.
