Words, Words, Words - Part I
Feb 09, 2001

This is part I of a review called Words, Words, Words and is about two freeware programs that complement one another and that I use frequently. The first one can be downloaded (4.5 Megs) at: Word Web Version l.62

Word Web Developer Version 1.62 Word Web Developer is a scaled down version of Word Web Pro but it fullfills the need for a thesaurus/dictionary quite well for us average users. I'll do a walk through of what the program will do for you by using the word "gather" as an example.

Type the word in with the wrong spelling, press the search button and a message pops up in the first screen telling you the word was not found. The second screen gives you a list "closey" words, and depending on just how lousy a speller you are, the correct spelling may be on that list.

When the word "gather" is typed in correctly and the search button pressed; the first screen displays two meanings for "gather" if it is being used and a noun, and eight meanings if it is being used as a verb. The second screen displays nineteen synonyms under a Synonyms panel, and displays the word "spread" under an Antonyms panel, and four other panels labelled Causes, Typeof, Types, and lastly See also. These each contain information I am not going to discuss in this article out of consideraton for your time (translate this to - I don't want to bore you to death).

We can click on the number of each of the meanings in the first window and specific information about that meaning pops up in one of the panel sections in the second window. So for instance if I select the first Noun meaning of gather "Small folds or puckers made by pulling tight a thread in a line of stiching" the Synonyms panel will read "gathering" and the Type of panel will read sewing, stichery.

If we selected the first item under the Verb meaning "Get together" the Synonyms panel reads collect, garner, pull together. The Antonyms panel reads "spread".

The program definitions and synonyms data base contains 120,000 root words and the proper noun data base contains 100,000 synonym sets. Seems like enough words to meet most if not all my needs. So if you want to download a freebie that will be useful and is fun to fool around with give this one a try.

The next article will be about another freebie software program called: All Purpose Spell Checker Version 4.0
