Words, Words, Words - Part II
Feb 09, 2001

The is part II of the review entitled Words, Words, Words. The freeware being reviewed this time and can be downloaded (4.7 Megs) at:
All Purpose Spell Checker Version 4.0
Finding a freeware spell checker is not something that happens frequently; in fact it's down right rare. This one is what is known as a universal spell checker; which means that you copy the text you want checked to the clip board, and them paste it to this program for spell checking. There is no support offered for the program but that's not a problem; since non is needed.
As you can see from the picture above the toolbar for the program consists of six command buttons; from left right the symbols mean:Do it, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All, Clear All.
Once the text is copied to the main window and the Do it button clicked the familiar(for all us lousy spellers) misspelled window will pop up and each misspelled word (or in some cases - words not yet in the programs database) will be shown in order and you can deal with each of them by selecting one of the buttons shown in the the picture above. That is, Ignore, Replace, Add to Custom, and etc.
When you have gone throught the list just click on the Select All command in the program's toolbar and then return to whence the text orginally came and use your paste command to paste over that text and you have now made it look like you can spell.
The author makes the following observations on compatibility with other programs:
"The APSC was originally designed to check the text of spelling in applications that are usually too small to provide their own built-in spelling capabilities. It will check plain text in programs such as Notepad or on text fields of web pages, but it frequently will not work directly with programs carrying a great deal of formatting, such as MS Works documents. Certain mail programs are also incompatible with it as well, like Outlook Express.
Although the "Find your message textbox" and "Send this text back to message" buttons might not work with all programs, you can still cut and paste text from other programs to and from the APSC using the common clipboard keys, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V." (1)
